My life story
My name is Thabo and I live in the Lomanyang Village in
Mafikeng in the Northwest Province in South Africa. I have
been a sculptor for 8 years now and I really enjoy my work.
I do abstract and non-abstract art pieces. I also make pieces
on request.
I use a very unique stone, the African Stone (or Wonder Stone),
found only in Ottosdal in South Africa. It is soft enough
to carve, but very long lasting.
I start a piece by cutting the stone to size. I use a hammer
and chisel to do it. I then rasp it and wash it with sandpaper.
If I am satisfied with the form, I boil the piece in water
for one hour.
I then use a polish to bring out the natural color of the
stone.
Every piece I make is authentic. I never make any copies.
I also do not use machines - everything is handmade.
